The Art Camp included youth aged 7 years to 14 years.  All participated in piecing the Phoenix Wildfire glass mosaic panel.

The art camp kids used hand tools to cut glass and the older (11-14 year olds) kids even got to use a glass grinder and ring saw wet saw.  All kids helped piece the mosaic.

The kids worked in groups on different parts of the mosaic and rotated to different areas to gain more experience.  Here Sophia is demonstrating how to cut glass with glass nippers.

Every summer the Vallejo Community Arts Foundation (VCAF) hosts a two-week summer art camp for youth aged 11 to 14 years old.  In 2014 I had the singular fun of teaching mosaic to a delightful group of 30 kids.  They made their own individual mosaics (see below photo gallery).  They also worked as a team to piece a large mosaic of pelicans (see above) which later on was sold on March 15th, 2015 for $3500 to benefit VCAF’s Youth Summer Art Camp Scholarship fund.

It was a fun night with people walking about looking at art, sipping wine, stores open, lights everywhere, music streaming out from the storefronts.  I had my art friend, Stan, set up his inflatable party decorations, here are some photos of his amazing work and of the evening, including my mosaic mural.  Some of the photos are of my own storefront at 723 and 727 Marin Street, and some are of the location of my Vallejo Art Windows installation at 420 Virginia Street.

This five part mosaic mural was installed at 420 Virginia Stree, Vallejo, Ca, as part of the Vallejo Art Windows project which fills empty retail windows with fine art.  This mosaic mural was created with the help of many community residents of all ages who helped create individual small mosaics of fish, birds, stars, and moons, which were then incorporated into this cohesive larger design which now graces the recently beautifully renovated Virginia Street, a Historic Downtown Vallejo gem.
