Glass mosaic panel 6’x2′ Pelicans Sardines Sunset Waves
Every summer the Vallejo Community Arts Foundation (VCAF) hosts a two-week summer art camp for youth aged 11 to 14 years old. In 2014 I had the singular fun of teaching mosaic to a delightful group of 30 kids. They made their own individual mosaics (see below photo gallery). They also worked as a team to piece a large mosaic of pelicans (see above) which later on was auctioned off to benefit VCAF’s Youth Summer Art Camp Scholarship fund.
VCAF is now Vallejo Center for the Arts and no longer hosts Summer Art Camps.

I provided the students with pre-cut glass tiles in a rainbow of colors so that they could focus on using the glass tile in their compositions and not have to worry about being unskilled at cutting glass. They pieced remarkably graceful pelicans and made choices about how to piece the tiles that are clearly readable as feathers, beautiful work by young artists aged 7-14.
